Mrs. Jones

I represent Mrs. Jones. I was among the women enumerated in the Return of Women & Children of the 31st Regiment, Capt. Vignoles’ Company, in September 1768. It was the practice of the British Army to allow their soldiers to bring wives and children to overseas assignments, usually because we had no other way to support ourselves than to accompany them. The name of my husband – if I had one at the time – was not given in the Return. The August 1768 muster roll for the 31st lists three men named Jones: Thomas, Joseph, and William. At the moment, research has not determined which of them was my husband. One child was enumerated with me in the Return.
