Lt. John Jones

I represent John Jones. I was a lieutenant in His Majesty’s 16th Regiment of Foot. The 16th arrived in Pensacola in the spring of 1770. I had been commissioned an ensign on January 1, 1766, became Quartermaster in January 1768, and lieutenant on July 22, 1769. I was married to Susannah Jones and we had a daughter, Anne. Anne died in infancy on November 10, 1770. Her cause of death was “teeth.” In the 18th century, if a child suffered from dehydration, malnutrition, dysentery – or any of the countless ailments infants were prone to in those days – while they were teething, the death was often blamed on the teething rather than the underlying condition. She probably still lies in an unmarked grave in Pensacola.
