I represent Karl Christoph Hohmann. I was a 2nd lieutenant in the 3rd Waldeck Regiment. I was born in Bergheim. I was married in 1756 and had a son, August Wilhelm Hohmann. The 3rd Waldeck was hired by the British from Waldeck Prince Frederick Karl Augustus to assist them in fighting the American rebels in the Revolutionary War. My son and I sailed with the regiment for North America in 1776. At that time, I was an ensign in the 4th company. After two years of heavy action we were sent to Pensacola, along with the provincial loyalist forces of Maryland and Pennsylvania. In September 1779, August, who was an ensign in the 5th company, was taken prisoner by the Spanish in Baton Rouge. He died in December of illness while still in prisoner status. I was promoted to 2nd lieutenant in April 1780. After the surrender in May 1781, we were sent by the Spanish to New York, on our honor not to fight against the Spanish again until we were exchanged. I and my batman [orderly or personal servant to an officer] boarded the Santa Rosalia on May 29, 1781 to make that voyage. We lived in encampments at New Town on Long Island. The Waldeckers resumed duty in July 1782. A year later, in July of 1783, I and the Waldeck Regiment, 418 men and women and 13 children, left New York to return to Europe.
