Lt. Hugh Mackay Gordon

I represent Hugh MacKay Gordon. I was a Boston Loyalist, a lieutenant in His Majesty’s 16th Regiment of Foot. I served Deputy Muster Master and Deputy Inspector of Provincials in British West Florida – that basically means that I kept track of every one in uniform there. In late 1779, with both the Maryland Loyalists Regiment and the Pennsylvania Loyalist corps depleted by disease and desertion, I helped merge the two into the United Maryland and Pennsylvania Loyalists.” At the surrender of Pensacola on May 10, 1781, I was listed in the Spanish accounting of the garrison as an “Extra Aide-de-Camp” of General Campbell. I was a right-hand man. I became a prisoner of war with the rest of the garrison, but after the war I continued in the 16th, eventually commanding it as Colonel. I died in 1823, having attained the rank of Lt. General.
