I represent William Forbes. I was a Major and commander of His Majesty’s 35th Regiment of Foot. I was commissioned at that rank in October 1762. I and my regiment arrived at Pensacola on November 30, 1763 to take military control of Pensacola and its fort. I was not terribly impressed with the state of the town, it seeming to me to be little more than a few bark huts left by the Spanish. I remained the de facto military governor until the arrival of Governor George Johnstone in October of 1764. It was once told of me that I rewarded naval officers who helped establish British authority among the indigenous peoples by securing horses for their use while ashore. Four horses cost me four gallons of rum, but I was a good horse trader – my rum was half water.
