I represent John Eliot. I was born in 1742 in Port Eliot, Cornwall. I was appointed to be the second Governor of West Florida in March 1767, but my departure was delayed (possibly because I knew of all the political turmoil going on in the colony and I was putting it off), so I did not arrive until two years later. I was a young man, 26 years old, and a captain in the Royal Navy. I had served in the Seven Years’ War. Everyone in Pensacola was glad to see me arrive; they had been under the reins of the Lt. Gov. Montfort Browne and few were happy with his handling of anything. Unfortunately, I was apparently suffering from a brain tumor – I had debilitating headaches that got progressively worse – and exactly a month after I stepped on shore at Pensacola, I committed suicide in my office.
