William Dunbar

I represent William Dunbar. I was a planter in the Natchez district of British West Florida. I was born in 1749 in Morayshire, Scotland. I came to Philadelphia for my health in 1771, then came down the Mississippi in 1773. I was a man of some education, shrewd in business, and rapidly made my fortune in manufacturing staves. When James Willing, the American rebel, came through the area with his raiders in 1778, he ordered his men to leave my estate alone. But they were bent on plunder and simply waited until I had fled into Spanish territory to strip my plantation bare. Despite the appeal of the land nearer the Mississippi, I took part in the Pensacola social scene. I had an ongoing correspondence with Thomas Jefferson, who recommended me for membership in the American Philosophical Society.
