Juan de Aléman

I represent Juan de Aléman. I served in the Louisiana Regiment under Bernardo de Gálvez. I was born in Aguimes, Canary Islands. My wife, Juana Ramirez, our 14-year-old son Antonio, and I arrived around 1778 with a group of Canary Islanders, soldiers and their families who came to both reinforce the Spanish troops and potentially settle in the Spanish New World. Gálvez recruited the most promising soldiers for his Gulf Coast campaign and set the rest to farming and guarding the home front. There were eventually 700 of us, with 1600 wives and children. I was given land on Bayou La Fourche and, according to New Orleans Diocesan records, we had another son, Juan, in 1779.
