I represent Daniel Clark. I was a rarity in the British colony of West Florida – I was American by birth. In 1760, I was given the honor of election to the American Philosophical Society. I was elected to represent Mobile in the House of Commons for the provincial General Assemblies spanning from November 1766 to October 1768. During the second Assembly in 1767, I was elevated to the Council, or upper house. I was considered a member of the “Scotch party,” or a group Scots strongly allied with Governor George Johnstone and hostile to Lt. Gov. (and later, acting Governor) Montfort Browne, so – of course – I was dismissed from that Council as soon as Browne took the reins. In October 1769, I was gratned 1267 acres a quarter-mile southwest of Mobile.
