Caleb Carpenter

I represent Caleb Carpenter. I was a partner in a Pensacola trading firm with my brother, Richard Carpenter. We came down from Rhode Island in 1765 and set up shop. Several people in this Sampler appeared in our ledger books for 1767-1768. We appeared to deal in general merchandise – everything from soap to molasses to shingles to shoes. We took payment in cash, though sometimes we took deer skins or other goods in kind. We also supplied the military. In 1771, Richard and I moved our families west, along with a lot of West Florida settlers, to Manchac region of Louisiana, where we were granted land to build plantations.
