The Mortar

I represent The Mortar. I was a headman of the Upper Creek people. The British knew from their agents among the native nations that it was imperative I be persuaded to come to the negotiating table in order to secure an alliance with the Creek towns I led. Even when they managed to find me in the Creek hunting grounds, I stubbornly resisted attending the “Indian congress” in Pensacola. I tried to organize an anti-British alliance with the Cherokees, and I tried to embargo British trade goods to Choctaws and Chickasaws. Finally I did attend the congress in Pensacola in May 1765 with John Stuart and Governor George Johnstone. They had their work cut out for them to convince me that the intentions of the British were trustworthy, and I put up a tough negotiation before a treaty was finally signed.
