Capt. Francis Vignoles

I represent Francis Vignoles. I was a captain and company commander in His Majesty’s 31st Regiment of Foot. The 31st was an infantry regiment that joined the garrison at Pensacola in 1765 and stayed – with a brief transfer to St. Augustine in 1769 – until 1772. I was commissioned in July 1765. I appear in the 1767-1768 ledger books of Pensacola merchants Richard and Caleb Carpenter purchasing corn, soap, and Scotch barley. In January 1769 I petitioned for a grant of 3000 acres near Natchez. The Council issued the order for the land to be surveyed, but I died on July 25, 1769. The record does not list a cause of death. I probably still lie in an unmarked grave in Pensacola.
