Ens. Wilhelm Theodor Ursall

I represent Wilhelm Theodor Ursall. I was an ensign in the 3rd company of the 3rd Waldeck Regiment, commissioned in April 1780. I was born in 1753 Holzmuenden, Braunschweig. My religion was Evangelical (which, in this context, means “Protestant”). The 3rd Waldeck Regiment was hired by the British from Waldeck Prince Frederick Karl Augustus to assist them in fighting the American rebels in the Revolutionary War. I sailed for North America with the regiment in 1776 as a sergeant with 4 years’ previous service in the Braunschweig army. After two years of heavy action we were sent to Pensacola, along with the provincial loyalist forces of Maryland and Pennsylvania. Evangelical. I was killed by a cannonball in the Advanced Redoubt at Pensacola. Robert Farmar’s journal of the siege of Pensacola for May 4, 1781 says: “12 o’clock 94 Provincials under the command of Major McDonald and Waldecks under the command of Lt. Col. De Horn to support them, stormed the works in front of the advanced redoubt, burnt their works and spiked 6 pieces of cannon & 4 pounders. The enemy had a great many killed, wounded, and taken prisoners… Ensign Ursel of the Waldeck was killed by a cannon ball.”
