I represent Mrs. Tunks. I was among the women enumerated in the Return of Women & Children of the 31st Regiment, Capt. John Ross’ company, in Sept 1768. It was the practice of the British Army to allow their soldiers to bring wives and children to overseas assignments, usually because we had no other way to support ourselves than to accompany them. The name of my husband was not given on the Return, but it was probably Pvt. John Tunks, who died of yellow fever in 1765. There were no children enumerated with me. In the 1767-68 ledger books of Pensacola merchants Richard and Caleb Carpenter, a Jane Tunks purchased rum and molasses. This may have been me.
