I represent Charles Stuart. I was a resident of West Florida during the British period, the Deputy Indian Agent stationed at Pensacola. According to my son’s 1783 petition for losses in West Florida, I served at the siege of Quebec and in July 1760 was commissioned a lieutenant in the 78th Regiment. In 1766 I became the Deputy Superintendent for Indian Affairs in the Southern Department. I was originally recommended by Governor Peter Chester to replace Superintendent John Stuart when he died, but after high-level opposition to my appointment, I withdrew from consideration. I was appointed to serve on the West Florida council – which not only advised the governor but also sat as the Upper House in the provincial General Assembly – for sessions beginning in 1771 and 1778. I was taken prisoner by the Spanish in Mobile and died in captivity on April 4, 1780.
