Jane Ross

I represent Jane Ross. I was the wife of Alexander Ross, a substantial planter in West Florida during the British period. According to Alexander’s 1778 petition for a grant of land on the Mississippi River, we had arrived in the province in August 1768. We had a daughter named Mary. She was baptized in Pensacola – probably as an infant – on November 2, 1768. My name appears in the 1767-1768 ledger books of Pensacola merchants Richard and Caleb Carpenter as having purchased rum – a staple of the British diet at the time.
