I represent the child of Mrs. Riley enumerated with her in the Return of Women & Children, 31st Regiment of Foot, Capt. Hodgson‘s Company, Sept 1768. The 31st was an infantry regiment that joined the garrison at Pensacola in 1765 and stayed – with a brief transfer to St. Augustine in 1769 – until 1772. My father’s name was not given in the Return, and the August 1768 muster roll for the 31st is not helpful: There was a Cpl. John Riley, a Pvt. Joseph Riley, and a Pvt. James Riley in Hodgson’s company!
