I represent Peter Quash. I was the servant of George Gauld, surveyor and cartographer of West Florida. My name was entered into the muster books of HMS Adventure on December 31, 1766, accompanying Gauld on a surveying trip. After that my name would accompany his everywhere he went. I was born in Jamaica, which hints that I was a man of color, but my status as free, enslaved, or indentured is unknown. I served Gauld until September 17, 1776, when I was discharged ‘by request.'”
