James Noble

I represent James Noble. I was a land speculator in West Florida during the British period. Backed by investors in London, I accumulated quite a bit of land in the colony, including a parcel of 21 lots on the western side of Pensacola. I built quite a compound on it. It was just below Washerwoman’s Creek, a prime source of fresh water for the town, its garrison, and the ships moored in the harbor. I also acquired several tracts for my investors from the Spanish and the indigenous peoples before the military even arrived to claim Pensacola from the Spanish in 1763. The provincial council rejected my claims for them on the basis that I had no proof of the sales, but they also didn’t like the idea of large investors scooping up all the land; they wanted yeoman farmers and small business owners in the town.
